I had never considered making a dandelion lip balm until I had such great success with the hand salve. Anything that great on the hands is worth a shot on the lips too and, I have to say, it’s wonderful. After my success with the salve on our Las Vegas trip, I whipped up some tubes of lip balm and tucked one in my pocket and passed the others around to family members whose skin is still making that winter-to-summer transition.
As with the salve, a lip balm requires a dandelion-infused oil and then added beeswax to help the product set up in the tube. You can easily make both your salve and lip balm in one project period by first making the salve and then adding extra beeswax for the balm or, perhaps a little more precisely, making a larger batch of infused oil and separating the batch for each of these recipes.
As with the salve, you will want to use dried dandelion with a focus on the flower portion. I simply harvested one day, scattered the flowers about on a tray to dry for a week or so, and then infused the oil and made the balm. This approach gives you a bit of a break after all of that work of the harvest, crawling around pinching dandelions off their stems.
If you haven’t made lip balm before your biggest hurdle will be deciding on your packaging. You can buy empty lip balm tubes (here at Amazon) or use small salve containers (here). I keep a bag of tubes in my cupboard so that I can make whatever lip balm strikes my fancy. They are inexpensive and easy to use, though I do recommend buying a fill tray to make filling them easier. For the beeswax, I do recommend beeswax pellets for convenience (here at Amazon). I have also found this filling tray (here) to be very convenient.
